 From the beginning, Pecknel Music Company - the Carolinas' largest independent family-owned music retailer - has truly been "The Music Education Company," its history closely intertwined with the history of school music in South Carolina. Founder George Peck had been a representative for manufacturer C.G. Conn in the 1930's, and traveled from town to town to start bands and provide instruments, "...sort of like Professor Harold in The Music Man," according to his son Nicholas.
Nearly thirty years
later, George Peck
joined with fellow music industry veterans Jerry Nelson and Bob
Crainshaw to form Pecknel Music, and the
three settled on
a location in Greenville. The doors opened in July of 1959.
Later that year, Nicholas Peck, George's son, joined the team as a road representative, and with Jerry Nelson, covered the school band programs from the coast to the mountains, staying on the road four nights (and five days) every week. Their combined effort positioned Pecknel as a major force in the South Carolina school music business.
It was because of band director loyalty, and the service that music educators really appreciated (and still do!), that Pecknel grew to become the full-service school music dealer we are today.
In the early 1960's, Jerry Nelson left the road and started our Instrument Repair Shop, and today, Pecknel Music has the largest and finest in-house repair services in the Southeast, with full time repairmen in all three stores, all certified by the National Association of Band Instrument Repair Technicians.
Nicholas took over leadership of Pecknel Music in 1962, and during his tenure as President, the Greenville store moved to its present location, then very much considered "the suburbs". In 1968, a store was opened in Columbia, followed by the Charleston location in 1977.

In 1987, Nick's son Scott took over the reins of the company, committing to his family's history of supporting school music programs with unsurpassed customer service and the highest quality products and services. Scott has also molded Pecknel Music into a company that combines tradition with innovation and dependability with creativity, expanding Pecknel Music into a true full-line music company: Band and Orchestra Instruments; Pro Sound and Combo; Print Music; Sound System Design and Installation; Keyboard and Technology Labs; a Music Education Center offering lessons, classes and ensembles; Instrument Repair; and much, much more.

So, the history of Pecknel can be summed up in the love of and for music; of friendships and loyal customers, and the hard work of dedicated employees. This history will continue as Pecknel continues to grow to meet the needs of the music community, and we are thankful to each of you who has had and will have a part.
